Pruning Trees That Were Planted With the House
Tree trimming and pruning in Frisco is mostly about trees between ten and thirty years old: the live oaks, Shumard red oaks, cedar elms, Chinese pistachios and crape myrtles that went in when the neighborhood was built. At that age a tree's structure is set for the rest of its life. A young oak with two competing leaders, or a cedar elm with limbs bunched at one point on the trunk, will look fine for years and then split in a spring storm once those limbs are heavy. Good pruning now picks one main leader, spaces the scaffold limbs, and removes or shortens the branches that will cause trouble later.
What good pruning looks like
The tree care industry's standard for pruning is ANSI A300, and ISA guidance built on it is clear about a few things. Cuts are made just outside the branch collar, not flush with the trunk and not leaving stubs. Only as much live canopy is removed as the goal requires, and removing a large share of a tree's leaves at once stresses it. Topping, which means cutting a tree's main stems back to stubs, is not an accepted practice; it leads to weakly attached sprouts and decay. The same goes for stripping all the inner branches and leaving tufts of foliage at the ends of limbs, sometimes called lion's tailing. Crape myrtles are the most common victims of topping in Texas suburbs, and they flower and hold their shape better with selective thinning instead.
Timing around oak wilt
For oaks, when you prune matters as much as how. The Texas A&M Forest Service advises against pruning or wounding oaks from February through June, when sap beetles that carry oak wilt spores are most active, and recommends painting every oak wound right away in any season. Oak wilt has been documented in Collin County, so we schedule routine oak work in summer, fall and winter and paint each cut. Non-oak species such as cedar elm, pecan and Chinese pistachio can be pruned in more of the year, though heavy pruning in the hottest weeks of a dry summer is hard on any tree.
Clearance and mistletoe
In Frisco we also prune for clearance: limbs off roofs and gutters, branches lifted over sidewalks, driveways and the street, and growth kept back from the service line to the house. Cedar elms here are prone to mistletoe, which is cut out where it can be reached without removing too much of the limb.
What Trimming & Pruning Covers
Each pruning job starts with a goal: structure, clearance, health or storm resistance.
Structural pruning
Young trees trained to one strong leader with well-spaced limbs before problems are locked in.
Crown thinning
Selected limbs removed throughout the crown to reduce weight and wind resistance, without stripping the interior.
Deadwood removal
Dead and broken branches taken out after freezes, droughts and storms.
Crown raising and clearance
Lower limbs lifted over sidewalks, driveways and the street, and branches cut back from roofs.
Crape myrtle pruning
Selective thinning of crossing and inward stems instead of topping.
Mistletoe removal
Infected twigs on cedar elms and other hosts cut out where practical.

How Pruning Works
1. Agree on the goal
We walk the yard with you and agree on what each tree needs: structure, clearance, deadwood or thinning.
2. Price in writing
The work for each tree, the timing (especially for oaks), the cleanup and the price.
3. Prune
Cuts made outside the branch collar, larger limbs lowered by rope, oak cuts painted right away.
4. Site cleanup
Brush chipped or hauled, the yard raked, and a note on when each tree should be looked at again.

Why Choose Us for Tree Trimming & Pruning
No topping
We do not top trees or crape myrtles; we thin and shorten limbs to proper cuts instead.
Oak calendar respected
Routine oak pruning is booked outside February through June.
Tree Trimming & Pruning Questions
How often should trees in Frisco be pruned?
Young trees benefit from structural pruning every few years while they are establishing their shape. Mature trees typically need pruning less often, mainly to remove deadwood and keep clearance from the roof and lines. A tree that has been through a hard freeze or a storm should be looked at that season.
Can I trim branches from my neighbor's tree that hang over my fence?
In Texas, homeowners can generally trim branches that cross onto their property, up to the property line, as long as the work does not kill or seriously damage the tree. It is courteous, and often easier, to talk with your neighbor first. If the tree is an oak, the February through June oak wilt caution applies to your side too.
Is it bad to cut my crape myrtles back to stubs every winter?
Yes. Cutting back to the same stubs every year produces clusters of weak sprouts and knobby swelling on the trunks. Crape myrtles flower on new growth whether or not they are topped, so thinning out crossing, rubbing and inward-growing stems keeps them healthier and better looking.
Do you trim trees near power lines?
Not near primary lines; Oncor and CoServ handle those, and Oncor allows only line-clearance-certified workers within 6 feet of high-voltage lines. For limbs around the service drop to your house, Oncor can temporarily disconnect the line so the work can be done safely, and we help you schedule that.
