Coppell's Canopy at Thirty-Something

Coppell changed fast. Settled in the 1840s by German and French immigrants and Peters Colony families, it was called Gibbs Station until 1892, when it was renamed for New York banker George Coppell. It incorporated in 1955 by a vote of 41 to 1. Then DFW International Airport opened next door in 1974, and through the 1980s and 1990s the city grew from a small farming village into a large suburb. By 2000 nearly all of its residentially zoned land was built out. For Tree Service, that history means one thing: most of Coppell's yard trees were planted in a twenty-year window and are now thirty to forty-five years old.

What trees that age need

At thirty-plus years, planted shade trees are big. Red oaks, live oaks, cedar elms, pecans, ashes and Bradford pears that went in with the houses now reach over roofs, across fences and into the street. Some common issues:

  • Overextended limbs. Long, horizontal limbs carry weight far from the trunk. Reduction pruning shortens them to a strong side branch.
  • Clearance. Limbs over the roof, chimney, driveway and street need regular lifting and shortening.
  • Codominant stems. Two trunks of equal size meeting in a tight V often have included bark and can split. Some can be managed with reduction, and a few call for cabling; others are safer removed.
  • End of life for short-lived species. Bradford pears, with a typical lifespan under 25 years, and other fast growers planted in that era are often failing now.

Owners with long horizons

Census figures show 68.8% of Coppell homes are owner-occupied, with a median owner-occupied value of $560,500, and 85.8% of residents lived in the same house a year earlier. People tend to stay, and so do their trees. A maintenance cycle every three to five years, rather than waiting for a limb to come down, is the most cost-effective plan for most Coppell yards.

Replanting for the next thirty years

When a tree from the build-out era reaches the end of its life, the replacement choice sets up the next few decades. Long-lived species suited to North Texas clay, such as bur oak, Shumard oak, cedar elm and Chinkapin oak, generally outperform the fast, short-lived trees of the 1980s and 1990s. Plant them where they will have room: away from the foundation, the driveway and overhead lines. We grind the old stump and can suggest a planting spot.

Weather to plan around

North Texas brings spring hail and wind, summer drought and the occasional deep freeze. In February 2021, Dallas reached −2°F, its coldest reading since 1930. Freezes like that crack bark and kill back sensitive trees, and the damage sometimes appears months later as dead limbs. If a tree leafed out poorly the spring after a hard winter, have it checked before the next storm season.

Coppell Questions

My tree is as old as my 1990s house. Is it near the end of its life?

That depends on the species. Bradford pears and some fast growers often decline within about 25 years, while oaks, pecans and cedar elms can live far longer. We look at the species, the structure and any decay to tell you where your tree stands.

What is cabling, and does my tree need it?

Cabling installs a flexible steel cable high between two weak stems to limit how far they can spread apart in wind. It can extend the life of a valuable tree with a weak fork, but it is not a fix for decay. We will tell you if it is a reasonable option.

Can a tree damaged in the 2021 freeze still be saved?

If it has leafed out fully since then and the dead wood has been removed, it likely recovered. If it is still producing dead limbs or thin foliage, the damage may be ongoing. A look at the bark and crown will tell us more.

Do you remove trees near alleys and fences in older Coppell neighborhoods?

Yes. Trees along fence lines and alleys are taken down in sections and lowered by rope, protecting the fence and the neighbor's side.
