A Planned City Whose Trees Have Come of Age

Tree Service in The Colony starts with the city's unusual history. In 1973 the homebuilders Fox and Jacobs bought about 3,000 acres around State Highway 121 and FM 423 and began building a planned community of mostly single-family homes. The first model homes were finished in 1974, and the first families moved in that October. A shade tree planted in one of those early front yards is now close to fifty years old. Many of them have reached full size, and some are past their best years.

That shapes almost every call we get from the original neighborhoods. Owners want to know whether a big tree that has been there as long as the house is still sound, whether its limbs are too heavy over the roof, and what to do about roots lifting the driveway. Those are fair questions, and the answers depend on the species, the wood and the way the tree has been pruned in the past.

Signs an older yard tree needs attention

  • Dead branches high in the crown, especially larger than your wrist
  • Mushrooms or soft, crumbly wood at the base or at old pruning wounds
  • Cracks running along a trunk or where two big stems meet
  • Bark falling away in patches with no new bark behind it
  • A crown that leafs out later and thinner every spring

Any one of those is worth a closer look. Two or more, on a tree that could hit the house, should not wait.

The lake factor

The city is bordered on the west by Lewisville Lake, and about 23 miles of shoreline lie inside city limits, which is where the nickname 'City by the Lake' comes from. Homes near the shoreline and the parks get more wind than those on interior streets. Trees there often grow lopsided toward the water and carry long limbs on one side. Reducing those limbs back to good lateral branches lowers the load without leaving the tree misshapen.

Small lots, close neighbors

The 2020 census counted 18,814 housing units in a city of about 16 square miles, and a good share of the original homes sit on compact lots with fences on all sides. Removing a big tree there means taking it apart piece by piece and lowering the wood with ropes, not dropping it whole. We plan the rigging, protect fences and lawns, and write down in the estimate how the wood and debris will leave the property.

Replanting

When an old tree has to go, the stump can be ground below grade so you can replant or lay sod. If you want a new shade tree, we can suggest species that suit heavy clay and a lot of this size, and where to put it so it does not end up over the roof in twenty years.

The Colony Questions

Our tree is as old as the house. Does that mean it should come down?

No. Age alone is not a reason to remove a tree. Many species live far longer than fifty years. What matters is decay, cracks, dieback and what the tree could hit. We check those things and tell you honestly which way it leans.

Tree roots are lifting our driveway. Can you cut them?

Sometimes, but cutting a large structural root close to the trunk can make a tree unstable. We look at where the root is, how big it is and how much of the root system it represents before recommending root pruning, a driveway redesign or, in some cases, removal.

Can you remove a tree in a backyard with no gate access for equipment?

Yes. Many Colony backyards are fully fenced with narrow gates. The tree is taken down in pieces, lowered by rope and carried out. The estimate will say if a fence panel needs to come off.
