Ranch Country in the Suburbs
Copper Canyon has kept its country character while suburbs filled in around it. The town apparently took its name from "Copperhead Canyon," an area once known for venomous snakes, and it formally incorporated in 1973. Traditional ranches remain, and the town is mainly a bedroom community with little commercial development, next to the master-planned Lantana development. The 2020 census counted 1,731 residents in 553 households on about 4.6 square miles of land. Tree Service here is closer to ranch and estate work than to subdivision trimming.
What rural lots need
With about 378 residents per square mile, Copper Canyon properties are large, and their trees are spread across pastures, fence lines, creek draws and homesites. We usually start by looking at the whole property and dividing it up:
Around the house: clearance from roofs and chimneys, removal of dead limbs, and assessment of any big tree that could reach the house.
Along drives and gates: raising limbs for trucks, trailers and emergency vehicles, and clearing dead trees that could fall across the only way in or out.
On fence lines: removing dead and leaning trees and cutting back limbs over wire.
In pastures and draws: selective removal of dead trees near paths and structures, and cedar thinning where it is crowding oaks.
Watch where you step
The town's name is a fair warning. Brush piles, wood stacks and rock in creek draws are good snake habitat in warm months. When we clear brush or move wood, we work carefully, and we suggest owners take the same care when stacking firewood or reaching into brush.
Native oaks deserve protection
Denton County sits on the edge of the Eastern Cross Timbers, where post oaks can live for centuries; some old-growth Cross Timbers post oaks are 200 to 400 years old. On a homesite, a big native oak is irreplaceable in a human lifetime. If you are planning a new driveway, barn, pool or septic system, keep digging and heavy equipment away from its root zone and talk to us before work starts.
Weather and timing
Spring storms can bring down limbs across drives and fences. When that happens, call (469) 750-3092 and we will clear access first. For routine oak pruning, Texas guidance is to avoid February through June because of oak wilt and to paint fresh wounds right away, so we plan non-urgent oak work for summer, fall or early winter.
Creek draws and erosion
Trees growing along draws and small creeks hold the banks together, but they also lose soil from under their roots during heavy rain. Over time, bank-side trees lean toward the water and expose roots on the downhill side. Removing them can make erosion worse, so where a tree is not threatening anything, it is often better left in place. Where one leans toward a crossing, fence or building, careful removal that leaves the stump and roots in the bank can be a good compromise.
Wood, chips and cleanup
Many owners want logs cut for firewood, chips spread on trails or around trees, or brush piled for wildlife. Others want everything hauled. Tell us what you prefer, and the written estimate will say exactly what stays and what goes.

Copper Canyon Questions
Can you clear dead trees that could block our driveway?
Yes. Trees along the only access to a property are a priority. We remove dead and leaning trees within reach of the drive and raise limbs so trucks and emergency vehicles can pass.
We want to keep the wooded feel. Can you just take out the dangerous trees?
Yes. Selective removal is common on rural lots. We remove dead and hazardous trees near structures and paths and leave healthy trees and native understory in place.
How should we protect a big oak when adding a barn or pool?
Keep digging, trenching and heavy equipment out of as much of the root zone as possible, and avoid changing the grade around the trunk. Plan it before construction starts; damage is hard to reverse.
Should we grind every stump on our acreage?
Usually not. Grinding makes sense near the house, in lawns and wherever you mow or drive. In pastures and wooded areas, low-cut stumps can often stay, which keeps the cost down.
Do you work in Lantana too?
We work on properties around Copper Canyon. Give us the address when you call and we will confirm.
