Trees Along the Lake

Tree Service in Little Elm has a lot to do with the lake. The town sits along the northern and eastern shores of Lewisville Lake, and its central section is surrounded by water on three sides. Wind crosses that open water without anything to slow it, so lakeside trees tend to lean, carry one-sided crowns and take a beating in spring storms. On March 2, 2023, a powerful storm through North Texas tore the facade off a Little Elm supermarket. Storms like that put a lot of limbs on lakeside roofs.

Old name, new town

C.C. 'Kit' King established the community in 1844 and named it for the elms on the creek banks where it stood, and in 1852 he became postmaster of Denton County's first post office. The town only incorporated in 1966 and had 3,646 residents in 2000. By 2020 it had 46,453, and the Census estimate for 2025 is 62,727. That means two very different tree settings: a handful of older properties with big native elms, cottonwoods and willows near the water, and a large stock of newer homes with trees planted by builders in the last twenty years.

Things we see a lot here

  • Cottonwoods and willows near the shore. Both grow fast in wet ground and both drop limbs. Cottonwoods get tall quickly and their wood is weak; a big one over a house deserves an inspection.
  • Lean toward the water. Trees on the shore side of a lot often grow toward the light over the lake. A lean is not automatically dangerous, but a lean that changes, or soil heaving on the opposite side, is.
  • Young trees on wind-exposed lots. Builder trees on newer streets need staking removed on time and structural pruning so they do not develop weak, competing leaders.
  • Shallow roots in wet clay. After a long wet spell, saturated soil loosens the root plate. That is when uprooting happens.

Parks and greenbelts

Little Elm has five major community parks. McCord Park is a wooded 38-acre park with trails and a disc golf course, and Cottonwood Park sits in the Lakefront district by Cottonwood Creek Marina. Homes that back onto wooded park land or creek corridors often have native trees right at the property line. If one of them is dead or leaning toward your house, we can assess it and talk through who owns it before any work is planned.

How we price a Little Elm job

We walk the property, look at access from the street and the shore side, and write down each tree and task. Some lake-lot jobs are easy to reach; others need wood lowered by rope because there is no room to drop it. You get a written estimate that spells out cleanup and hauling. Little Elm Questions

The cottonwood by the shore drops branches every storm. Should it come down?

Not always, but cottonwoods have weak wood and grow fast, so big ones over a house or dock deserve a close look. We check for decay, cracks and the condition of the limbs over targets, then give you the option of reducing the crown or removing the tree.

Can you reach trees on the lake side of my lot?

In most cases, yes. If there is no room to drop wood, we lower it with ropes and carry it out. The written quote describes how access will work so there are no surprises.

My tree is leaning more after weeks of rain. Is it urgent?

A lean that is getting worse, or soil cracking and lifting on the far side of the trunk, points to root failure. Keep people out of the fall zone and call (469) 750-3092 so we can look at it quickly.
