Caring for a Tree City's Canopy
Hickory Creek was recognized as a Tree City USA in August 2008, which tells you something about how the town thinks about trees. Our Tree Service work here is aimed at the same goal: keeping healthy trees healthy, fixing problems early and removing trees only when that is the right call. The town incorporated in 1963 with a population of 219 and had grown to 4,718 by the 2020 census, with 1,859 housing units on about 4.7 square miles of land, 30 miles north of downtown Dallas.
What Tree City USA means
The Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA program recognizes communities that maintain a tree board or department, have a tree care ordinance, spend a minimum amount per resident on community forestry and hold an Arbor Day observance. For homeowners it is mostly a signal that the town pays attention to its trees. If you are planning a removal near a street, in a right-of-way or in a common area, check with the town first about who owns the tree and any rules that apply.
Good pruning, explained
How a tree is cut matters as much as whether it is cut. Industry practice for tree pruning in the United States is set out in the ANSI A300 standard, and a few of its basics are worth knowing: 1. Cut to the branch collar. The swollen area at the base of a branch is where the tree seals wounds. Flush cuts remove it; long stubs leave dead wood behind. 2. Do not top. Cutting a tree back to stubs causes decay and a flush of weak sprouts. 3. Remove only what is needed. Taking too much live canopy at once stresses the tree. 4. Use reduction cuts to shorten limbs back to a side branch big enough to take over. We follow those principles on every job and are happy to explain each cut.
The value of a healthy tree
A mature shade tree cools a house in summer, slows stormwater runoff and adds to a property's appeal. Losing one is a long-term setback: a replacement planted today takes decades to give the same shade. That is why we recommend regular maintenance over waiting for a problem. Routine pruning every few years usually costs far less than an emergency removal after a limb comes down on the roof.
Typical work in Hickory Creek
- Crown cleaning on mature shade trees
- Clearance pruning from roofs, chimneys and driveways
- Structural pruning on younger trees in newer sections of town
- Removal of dead or hazardous trees, in sections where space is tight
- Stump grinding and full cleanup
Oak timing
Oaks are common in the Lake Cities. Texas guidance is to avoid pruning oaks from February through June because sap beetles carrying the oak wilt fungus are attracted to fresh wounds, and to paint new wounds immediately in any season. We plan routine oak work outside that window.

Hickory Creek Questions
Does Tree City USA status mean I need a permit to cut my tree?
Not by itself. The designation reflects the town's forestry program and ordinance. Ask the town whether its rules cover your situation, especially for trees near streets or in common areas.
How often should a mature shade tree be pruned?
Every three to five years suits most large trees. Fast growers near a roof may need it more often, and slow-growing oaks can go longer. We can suggest a schedule for each tree on your property.
Why do you avoid topping trees?
Topping leaves large stubs that decay and causes fast, weakly attached regrowth that breaks easily. Reduction cuts back to side branches lower the tree's size without those problems.
Can you prune my oak tree in May?
We would rather not, because of oak wilt. Routine oak pruning is best done from July through January. If storm damage needs attention in spring, we make clean cuts and paint them right away.
