From Fishing Camp to Shady Streets
Shady Shores lives up to its name. In the mid-1920s, Dallas contractor John William Franck built a fishing camp of about ten wood-shingle cabins on the northern shore of the original Lake Dallas as a weekend retreat. A subdivision called Shady Shores began in 1932, and through the 1930s many of the camps were replaced by permanent homes, a number of which still stand. The town incorporated in 1960, mainly to avoid annexation by Denton, and had 2,764 residents at the 2020 census. Tree Service here often means working around older homes and the large trees that have grown up beside them for generations.
Old houses, old trees, small margins
Many older lake homes were built close to trees that were already there, on lots with small setbacks. Decades later, those trees may be huge and only a few feet from the walls. Removing or pruning them takes care. We take wood down in small pieces, lower it with ropes, protect roofs and porches, and avoid dropping heavy sections near older structures.
Signs of an aging tree
- Bark loose or missing in patches, with bare wood behind it
- Fungal conks or mushrooms on the trunk or at the base
- Large dead limbs, especially over the roof
- Hollow sounds when the trunk is tapped
- A crown that thins a little more each year
Old trees can live with some decay for a long time. The question is how much sound wood is left and what the tree could hit if it failed. We check both before recommending anything.
Shoreline and wet ground
The town sits on the northern shore of Lewisville Lake, which was enlarged in the late 1950s. Trees near the water deal with wind across the lake and soils that stay wet after big rains. Willows and cottonwoods do well in those spots but have weak wood and shed limbs. Large ones near a house or dock should be looked at every few years.
Keeping the shade
Most people in Shady Shores want to keep their trees. Our approach is to do the minimum that makes the tree safe: remove dead wood, reduce overloaded limbs, raise the canopy off the roof and keep the root zone undisturbed. When a tree has to come down, a replacement can be planted farther from the house so the next generation of shade does not crowd the building.
Firewood, chips and leftovers
Old trees produce a lot of wood. Oak, pecan and hackberry make good firewood once seasoned, and some owners like to keep a stack. Wood chips from the job can be left as mulch for beds and around remaining trees, where a few inches of chips help hold moisture in the summer. Tell us what you want to keep, and the rest is hauled away.
The Lake Cities
Shady Shores sits alongside Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek and Corinth, and we work across all four. If neighbors on your street also need tree work, ask about scheduling together.

Shady Shores Questions
A huge tree is only a few feet from my old house. Can it be removed safely?
Yes, with the right plan. We take it apart from the top down in small pieces, lower each one on ropes and keep weight away from the roof and porch. The estimate explains how the removal will be rigged.
There are mushrooms at the base of my oak. Is it rotting?
Fungi at the base often mean decay in the roots or lower trunk. How serious it is depends on how much sound wood remains. We check the trunk and root flare and tell you whether the tree is still safe.
Can you leave the wood chips for my garden beds?
Yes. Fresh chips make a good mulch for beds and around trees. Tell us how much you want left and where, and we will haul the rest.
Do you work in the other Lake Cities?
Yes. We cover Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek and Corinth as well, and can often group nearby jobs.
