Rich Soil, Big Trees

Farmers Branch has always been about good ground. A community called Mustang Branch existed here by 1843, and it was renamed to reflect the area's rich soil and farmland. In 1845 it became the first location of the Texan Land and Emigration Company, better known as Peters Colony. Today the city calls itself "The City in a Park," and its inner-ring neighborhoods between Interstate 35E, the Dallas North Tollway and Interstate 635 have some of the larger residential trees north of Dallas. Tree Service here is about caring for mature trees growing in soil that has been feeding them well for a long time.

A post-war suburb

Farmers Branch incorporated after an election on February 23, 1946, and grew as an inner-ring suburb of Dallas. Trees planted in the decades after incorporation are now large, with spreading crowns over homes, fences and streets. The 2020 census counted 35,991 residents and 17,100 housing units in about 11.9 square miles of land.

Common problems with large, older trees

1. Deadwood. Dead limbs high in the crown drop in wind. Crown cleaning removes them before they fall. 2. Overweight limbs. Decades of growth push limbs far out over roofs and streets. Reduction cuts shorten them to strong side branches. 3. Root conflicts. Big roots lift driveways and walks and crowd foundations. Root pruning can sometimes help, but cutting large structural roots near the trunk can make a tree unstable, so we assess carefully first. 4. Decay. Old wounds, storm scars and past bad pruning leave openings for decay. We check how much sound wood remains before recommending how to proceed. 5. Declining species. Some trees planted decades ago, such as fast-growing ornamental pears, are reaching the end of a short natural life.

Heavy clay and moisture swings

Dallas County sits on the blackland prairie, with black, alkaline clay that shrinks and cracks in dry weather and swells when wet. That movement affects both trees and foundations. During long dry spells, deep watering of large trees under the outer canopy helps them hold up through summer heat. Keep mulch thin and away from the trunk.

Working in an established neighborhood

Mature yards come with fences, sheds, patios, pools and overhead service lines. We plan every removal around what is there, lowering wood on ropes where needed. If a limb is tangled in an energized line, the electric utility has to clear it first.

Replanting

When an old tree comes down, grinding the stump lets you replant. Long-lived native species such as bur oak, Shumard oak, cedar elm and pecan suit the soil and climate here and, placed well, will give shade for generations.

Farmers Branch Questions

Tree roots are lifting my driveway. What are my options?

Options include careful root pruning, bridging or redesigning the drive, or in some cases removing the tree. Cutting a big structural root close to the trunk can make the tree unstable, so we assess the root and the tree before recommending anything.

Should I water my big tree in summer?

In long dry spells, yes. A slow, deep soak under the outer canopy every week or two helps mature trees in clay soil much more than frequent light watering. Follow any watering restrictions in effect.

My old ornamental pear split. Should it be removed?

Usually. Callery pears have weak, narrow forks and rarely recover well from a major split. Removal and a sturdier replacement is generally the better long-term choice.

Is there a best season for tree work in Farmers Branch?

Late winter suits most pruning and removals, since leaves are off and the ground is often firm. Oaks are the exception and are best pruned from July through January because of oak wilt. Storm damage, of course, gets handled whenever it happens.

Can you work around an overhead service line in my backyard?

We can prune and remove trees near service drops with care, but limbs touching energized lines need the electric utility first. We point out any line conflicts during the estimate.
