A Town Older Than Its Lake

Lake Dallas takes its name from a lake that no longer exists under that name. The Garza Dam, finished in 1927, created the original Lake Dallas, which served as Dallas's main water source for 31 years. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers then built the Garza-Little Elm Dam between 1948 and 1954, and in 1957 the old Garza Dam was breached to form today's much larger Lewisville Lake. A bridge that once linked the town to Little Elm was removed during that expansion; a replacement opened in August 2009. That long lake history is why Tree Service here often involves older, lake-town properties with big trees.

What older lake-town yards look like

Many Lake Dallas homes sit on lots that have had trees on them for decades. You find tall pecans and elms, hackberries along fences, cottonwoods and willows in low spots and the occasional big oak. With age comes:

  • Dead wood high in the crown that drops in wind
  • Decay at old pruning cuts or storm wounds
  • Limbs that have grown over roofs, driveways and neighbors' yards
  • Root systems that have heaved walks and crowded foundations

Our approach

We start with the trees that could do the most harm if they failed: the ones over the house, over the drive and over the street. For each, we decide whether pruning can make it safe or whether it should come down. Healthy trees with a few problems get crown cleaning and selective reduction. Trees with serious decay, splits or root failure are taken down in sections, with wood lowered on ropes when there is no room to drop it.

Wet soil and wind

The town has about 0.3 square miles of water inside its 2.75 square miles, and lots near the shore deal with soil that stays wet after heavy rain. Saturated clay lets root plates move. Combine that with a thunderstorm coming across the open lake and you get the conditions for uprooted trees. After a wet stretch, walk your yard and look for new leans, cracked soil at the base or roots lifting on one side.

Part of the Lake Cities

Lake Dallas, Hickory Creek, Shady Shores and Corinth are often grouped as the Lake Cities. We work across all of them, so if you and a neighbor in the next town both need work, we can often schedule the jobs together.

Trees near the water's edge

Lewisville Lake is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project. If your lot backs onto public lake land, trees on the public side are not yours to cut, even if they shade your yard. If one is dead or leaning toward your property, contact the managing agency rather than removing it. On your own side of the line, we can prune limbs back to your property and remove trees that are a hazard to your home.

Cleanup

Brush is chipped and hauled, logs are removed or cut to firewood length if you want them, and stumps can be ground below grade. Every item is written into the estimate.

Lake Dallas Questions

My old pecan drops dead limbs every storm. What can be done?

A crown cleaning removes dead and weak branches before they fall. On a big old pecan, that alone takes a lot of risk out of the tree. We also check for decay at old wounds that might affect larger limbs.

Can I cut a dead tree on the lake land behind my house?

Not without permission. Public lake land is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, so contact them about trees on their side. We can handle anything on your side of the property line.

Do you work in Hickory Creek and Shady Shores too?

Yes. We work across the Lake Cities and can often schedule neighboring jobs on the same day.

A big tree near the shore is leaning more after heavy rain. What should I do?

Treat it as urgent. A growing lean after saturated soil can mean the root plate is failing. Keep people out of the fall zone and call (469) 750-3092.
